What steps, if any, has your library taken to cope with the current economic situation?

Answers below from the October 2009 and April 2009 AALL Economic Outlook Surveys. Please feel free to add your own examples to the list.

Overall, law libraries are:

  • Looking at all print subscriptions very closely, canceling those that we can
  • Watching online usage of databases carefully to determine which subscriptions not to renew as well as renegotiate
  • Canceling overlapping or duplicative titles
  • Freezing the book budget; any new purchases must be countered by a cancellation of similar cost
  • Renegotiating contracts with large publishers
  • Leaving vacant positions unfilled; managing staff vacancies and expanded job duties
  • Reducing funds for travel
